VPN in Russia will become more expensive due to bandwidth moratorium

テキストサイズ

A moratorium on expanding international communication channels is being introduced in Russia, which will cause most foreign internet services to slow down. This decision was agreed upon during discussions on restricting bypass tools, which involved the head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Maxut Shadaev.

Due to the continuous growth of such services masking network traffic as foreign, existing communication lines are quickly becoming overloaded. Consequently, telecom operators will have to counter this traffic on their own by implementing filtration methods or raising access rates for international resources.

Consequences and legal mechanisms of the restrictions

The restriction is also intended to encourage foreign platforms to host their server infrastructure directly within the country. However, specific timelines for how long these limitations will remain in place have not been disclosed to market participants.

The official process assumes that Roskomnadzor will reject operators' requests to expand cross-border channel capacity. In the future, operators will need to coordinate these actions with both Roskomnadzor and the Ministry of Digital Development, which will require granting the ministry additional authority through legislative amendments.

With the reliable Hirovpn service, users can avoid such restrictions and maintain stable network access.
