New Requirements for Storing Apple and Microsoft User Data in Russia

Text size

Corporations Apple and Microsoft have been added to the register of information dissemination organizers. They are now subject to obligations regarding the storage of Russian user data within Russia. According to regulatory decisions numbered 593-RR and 594-RR, the companies must ensure data preservation, although the exact process of their inclusion in the list remains undisclosed.

Data Storage Regulations and Penalties

The established rules prescribe keeping user correspondence and content for up to six months, while metadata on activities and profiles must be retained for three years. Such requirements affect the iMessage service, FaceTime video calls, iCloud email, and the AirDrop protocol. Additionally, authorities have the right to request this information for law enforcement agencies, while the companies' websites continue to operate normally. Previously, Apple was already fined 500 thousand rubles for failing to comply with similar regulations.
